Impact of Crop Diversification on Household Food and Nutrition Security in Southern and Central Mali

Many African countries, including Mali, depend on the production of a single or limited range crops for national food security. In this heavy reliance basic commodities staple crops, even just one, exacerbates multiple risks to agricultural production, rural livelihoods, and nutrition. With in mind, smart campaign was initiated strengthen resilience nutritional situation households peasant communities where diet is mainly cereal-based remains very undiversified poor essential micronutrients. As part campaign, our study aims analyze impact diversification consumption household The analysis uses survey data from 332 individuals randomly selected. Multinomial logistic regression Simpson diversity index were used determine estimate determinants crop diversification. score weighted by frequency anthropometric indices (for children) assess status households. results show four types strategies diversification: 7.55% are cereals only, 5.66% combine millet–sorghum–groundnut, 41.51% millet–sorghum–groundnut–cowpea, 45.28% millet–sorghum–groundnut–cowpea–maize. estimation model shows that socioeconomic factors have positive influence. 34 villages 40.5 Bamako, based eight groups, we find quality insufficient areas, but it acceptable urban center Bamako.
